Huhtamäki Oyj’s Half-yearly Report January 1–June 30, 2026: Delivering comparable net sales growth and strong profitability

Huhtamäki reported Q2 2026 EBIT of EUR 74.2m (vs EUR 46.2m) and adjusted EBIT of EUR 103.7m (vs EUR 103.1m), alongside reported EPS of EUR 0.43 (vs EUR 0.20) and adjusted EPS of EUR 0.64 (vs EUR 0.63). H1 2026 showed comparable net sales growth of 1% (net sales EUR 1,955.8m, -3% reported) with adjusted EBIT of EUR 198.2m (-2%) and reported EBIT of EUR 157.4m (+13%), but free cash flow fell to EUR 33.9m (from EUR 63.1m). Results were supported by efficiency/cost savings and strong Flexible & Fiber Packaging performance, partially offset by higher transportation/energy costs and adverse currency impacts (net sales FX -EUR 77.8m in H1). Management reiterated 2026 outlook with trading conditions expected to remain relatively stable.

Analysis

Immediate read is constructive, but not a clean inflection. The market should reward evidence that a packaging platform can hold margins through FX and input-cost noise, yet the deeper signal is that mix is doing more work than volume. That matters because flexible and fiber are the higher-multiple, higher-incremental-margin pieces of the portfolio, while the lagging North America/foodservice exposure still behaves like a fixed-cost drag and can cap upside if volumes don’t improve.

Over the next 1-3 months, the key catalyst is not the headline profit line; it is whether management can show stabilization in North America and cleaner cash conversion. If the self-help program does not translate into orders and working-capital relief, investors will likely conclude that the margin improvement is mostly pricing discipline plus lower exceptional charges, not a true demand rebound. Over 6-18 months, footprint optimization and mix should support modest earnings power, but equity rerating will remain limited until free cash flow re-accelerates.

The contrarian risk is that consensus is overweighting the adjusted margin and underweighting how much of the improvement is coming from accounting normalization rather than operating velocity. That leaves the shares vulnerable to any renewed EUR strength or transport/energy re-acceleration, since pass-through is never perfect and the weakest end markets are the most price-sensitive. Falsifier: another quarter of North America underperformance with no visible FCF inflection by Q3/Q4.
