Circle: Three Revenue Layers And One Mispriced Stock

Circle (CRCL) is viewed as undervalued as shares price in mainly reserve income while payments and blockchain protocol segments offer upside. RLDC margin reached a record 41.4% in Q1 2026, aided by USDC migration from Coinbase and better distribution economics, even as reserve yields declined. Circle Payments Network transaction volume rose to $10B annualized with 136 financial institutions onboard, indicating rapid adoption and potential margin expansion ahead.

Analysis

This is less a reserve-yield story than a mix-shift story. The market is likely still capitalizing CRCL as a quasi-float vehicle, but the real upside comes from moving revenue toward transaction- and network-based economics, where incremental gross profit should scale much faster than reserve income. That creates software-like operating leverage: once the distribution machine is built, each additional institution should carry a materially higher margin than the first.

The clearest near-term loser is Coinbase, because any migration of stablecoin economics toward direct Circle channels reduces the value of its distribution toll booth. Over the next 1-3 months, the key read-through is whether payment activity converts from pilot usage into recurring fee-bearing volume; if it does, public payment rails like V/MA and cross-border processors will face a multiple ceiling before they see a direct P&L hit. Banks are a slower-burn risk: if corporate treasuries start parking more cash in stablecoin-like instruments, deposit franchises such as FISI could eventually face funding pressure, but that is a 6-18 month question, not a day-one trade.

The main risk is that consensus underestimates rate sensitivity while overestimating adoption speed. If policy rates fall faster than transaction monetization ramps, CRCL can still look optically strong on product headlines while earnings power stalls. The thesis breaks if next-quarter disclosures show margin slipping back below the low-40s and payments revenue remains immaterial; conversely, a second consecutive period of rising institution count plus higher transaction monetization would justify a major re-rate.
