AI Selloff, Apple vs. OpenAI & the Future of Defense Tech | Bloomberg Tech 7/13/2026

An AI-fueled stock rout in South Korea spilled into the US, with SK Hynix ADRs sliding for a second trading day. Separately, Apple escalated its AI rivalry by filing a sweeping trade-secrets lawsuit against OpenAI over ChatGPT. The combined read-through is risk-off for AI-exposed hardware and legal uncertainty for major AI platform players.

Analysis

The Korea-to-US spillover looks more like a positioning event than a clean fundamental read-through, but that still matters because AI memory names have become the market’s highest-beta expression of capex optimism. If this is a de-grossing wave, the first victims are not just SK Hynix proxies but any supplier whose valuation assumes uninterrupted AI buildout; the second-order effect is a flatter multiple for the whole semicap/AI hardware basket until investors see another hard capex print.

For Apple, the legal angle is less about near-term earnings and more about optionality control. A courtroom fight with OpenAI signals that Apple wants to own the distribution layer and avoid being boxed into a commodity-model dependency; if that strategy works, it is a medium-term positive for AAPL’s platform moat, but the near-term risk is that AI rollout complexity and partner friction keep the market skeptical about iPhone upgrade acceleration. That skepticism matters because AAPL is trading more on the promise of AI-driven services and device refresh than on any direct model revenue.

The contrarian view is that the selloff may be overdone if HBM/DRAM pricing remains tight and hyperscaler capex keeps surprising to the upside; in that case, today’s move is a clean entry point for the memory complex. The real falsifier for the bearish read is evidence that AI server demand is rolling over in upcoming cloud capex commentary or that Korean memory pricing eases faster than expected over the next 1-3 months. Absent that, this is probably a 1-3 week technical unwind, not the start of a structural AI thesis break.
