Bitcoin loses over 26,000 millionaire addresses in first half of 2026, Finbold report finds

Bitcoin’s “millionaire” wallet cohort fell 18% in H1 2026, dropping from 148,084 to 121,431 addresses (down 26,653), as BTC slid ~34.2% from ~$88,700 to ~$58,315. The decline was concentrated in $1m–$10m wallets (down 23,727), while $10m+ addresses fell to 13,533 (down 2,835). Finbold frames this as a price-driven reclassification of wallets above thresholds rather than definitive selling, but it signals heightened exposure of mid-tier holders to BTC volatility.

Analysis

This is not a fundamental demand shock so much as a leverage/wealth-effect reset: when BTC breaks lower, the first holders to disappear from the “millionaire” bucket are the marginal, mid-sized wallets that tend to be the most liquidity-sensitive. That matters because this cohort is often the discretionary bid for alt exposure, call-overwriting, and dip-buying; its retrenchment can create a self-reinforcing air pocket even if long-term holders are unmoved. In other words, the signal is more about weakening reflexive risk appetite than about outright liquidation.

For equities, the second-order impact is most acute in high-beta crypto proxies. Miners such as MARA and RIOT should underperform spot BTC on the way down because their equity value is a leveraged call on hash price, not just BTC; if BTC stalls, financing costs and dilution risk become more visible. COIN is a cleaner relative short only if volumes remain soft, while IBIT/FBTC are the cleaner expressions of spot sentiment because they directly transmit ETF flow data rather than corporate leverage.

The main falsifier is a fast reclaim of the prior broken range: if BTC reclaims roughly the $65k-$70k area and holds there for 2-3 weeks, this on-chain wealth signal likely reclassifies rather than confirms capitulation. Conversely, a break below the mid-$50ks would raise the odds of ETF outflows and miner balance-sheet stress over the next 1-3 months. The contrarian read: the report is backward-looking and can easily overstate bearishness if address concentration is distorted by custody migration or wallet splitting, so I would treat it as a positioning tell, not a macro thesis.
