Five major tech companies — Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle — have issued a combined $159 billion of corporate bonds in the first five months of 2026, already $51 billion above all of 2025 and more than the entire 2020-2024 period combined. As the hyperscalers scale spending into 2026, the market may initially reward revenue acceleration, but the payback period on infrastructure can extend if utilization lags adoption. The most vulnerable names are the ones with the least operating flexibility and the most aggressive buildouts; Oracle is the clearest spread-risk candidate because debt-funded growth leaves less room for a misstep if cloud monetization or AI workloads ramp slower than expected. For the richer cash generators, the real risk is not solvency but a future reset in free-cash-flow expectations, which could compress multiples once the market shifts from “capex intensity” to “earnings conversion.”
This also creates a subtle rate-market feedback loop: hyperscaler issuance can keep IG supply elevated even if the Fed eases, which may prevent long-end spreads from tightening as much as equity bulls expect. If AI demand remains intact, credit is likely the cleaner expression than equities because bondholders only need the capex to not catastrophically fail, whereas equity holders need meaningful residual economics. Conversely, if adoption growth disappoints, the equity de-rating should begin months before any meaningful credit stress appears.
The contrarian miss is that the bond market’s comfort may actually be a warning sign for equity returns: when well-capitalized incumbents can lever up cheaply to chase a frontier market, it often signals a phase where competition intensifies and returns on incremental capital compress. That suggests the next leg of alpha is not in chasing the obvious AI leaders, but in owning the infrastructure bottlenecks and selectively fading the most capex-heavy platform names once issuance and capex guidance peak.
