SQM reports Q1 earnings miss, revenue beats estimates

Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile (SQM) reported Q1 2025 adjusted EPS of $0.48, missing estimates of $0.61, while revenue slightly exceeded expectations at $1.04 billion, a 4.4% YoY decrease. Despite record lithium sales volumes, driven by strong EV and energy storage demand, the stock dipped 0.03% pre-market as the company anticipates lower lithium prices in Q2 due to oversupply; the iodine business performed strongly due to limited global supply and steady market growth.

Analysis

Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile (SQM) reported mixed first-quarter 2025 financial results, characterized by an earnings shortfall against a slight revenue beat. The company posted an adjusted earnings per share of $0.48, missing the analyst consensus of $0.61 by $0.13, while revenue reached $1.04 billion, marginally exceeding estimates of $1.02 billion. This revenue figure, however, marked a 4.4% decrease year-over-year from $1.08 billion. Despite the earnings miss, which prompted a minor 0.03% dip in its stock during pre-market trading, SQM achieved record first-quarter lithium sales volumes, up approximately 27% YoY, driven by robust demand from the electric vehicle and energy storage system sectors. A significant headwind, articulated by CEO Ricardo Ramos, is the recent decline in lithium prices due to oversupply, with an explicit expectation of "lower realized prices in the second quarter of 2025." Conversely, SQM's iodine business delivered strong performance, benefiting from steady market growth and elevated prices stemming from limited global supply; the company anticipates maintaining stable iodine sales volumes with prices remaining high. Net income for the quarter stood at $137.5 million, a notable improvement from a net loss of $869.5 million in the corresponding period last year, which was heavily influenced by significant tax-related accounting adjustments. SQM is actively pursuing production capacity expansion, with its Mount Holland refinery plant nearing initial product delivery and ongoing progress towards achieving 240,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate and 100,000 metric tons of lithium hydroxide capacity in Chile.
