This AI infrastructure stock has soared nearly 500% in a year. Jefferies says it can go higher

Jefferies initiated IREN at Buy with a $79 price target, implying 36% upside from Wednesday's close. The firm highlighted IREN's ~6 GW powered land bank and vertically integrated GPU cloud strategy, alongside $3.1 billion in annual recurring revenue from hyperscaler contracts with Microsoft and Nvidia. Shares have already surged 493% over the past 12 months, and Jefferies said the company's AI pivot positions it as a credible competitor to CRWV and NBIS.

Analysis

IREN’s real asset is not the equity story; it is the bottlenecked power stack. In a market where GPU availability is increasingly commoditized relative to deliverable megawatts, a large powered land bank creates an embedded call option on future AI demand that is harder to replicate than model risk or cloud software features. That makes the company less of a “mining pivot” and more of a scarce-power platform, which should compress the valuation gap versus other AI infra names if management keeps converting shells into revenue-generating capacity.

The second-order winner set is broader than the headline hyperscalers. Equipment vendors, electrical contractors, transformers, switchgear, and liquid cooling suppliers should see stronger order visibility because vertically integrated operators need to build faster and denser than traditional colocation. The pressure point is CRWV/NBIS-style peers: if IREN can secure recurring revenue with a mix of land, power, and GPU cloud, it validates a financing model where access to power outranks pure software adjacency, likely forcing smaller operators to bid up land and interconnect queues.

The main risk is not demand, it’s execution latency and capital intensity. Over the next 6-18 months, any slippage in permitting, utility interconnection, or GPU procurement could turn the bull case into a balance-sheet story, especially if financing costs stay elevated. A rapid re-rating also raises the bar: after a ~5x move, the stock only stays cheap if revenue conversion and contracted MW growth keep compounding faster than dilution and depreciation.

Consensus may be underpricing how much of IREN’s upside depends on scarcity value rather than immediate EBITDA. If the market starts valuing powered land banks like reserved pipeline capacity, not operating cash flow, the multiple can stay elevated even before full buildout monetization. But if hyperscalers slow contract signing or internalize more capacity build, the narrative can reverse quickly because the equity has already priced in a lot of perfection.
