Honda reported record Q1 operating profit of JPY 530.7B, with motorcycle operating profit up to JPY 233.9B and automobile operating profit of JPY 192.1B at a 5.0% margin despite a China-driven unit decline. The company raised FY Mar-2027 operating profit guidance to JPY 650B (+JPY 150B) and adjusted operating profit to JPY 1.17T (+JPY 170B), driven mainly by an updated FX assumption to JPY 155 per USD and favorable first-quarter tariff/FX impacts (JPY +78.1B tariff and JPY +90.8B FX). Offsetting risks include forecast EV-related losses of JPY 520B (mostly supplier compensation, with Q1 not fully recognized yet) and continued China weakness after a ~40% YoY shrink in ICE/hybrid demand, plus ongoing production disruptions following the Kumamoto earthquake (9 days at Kumamoto; multi-day suspensions at Saitama and Suzuka).

Analysis

Honda’s earnings quality is better than the headline EV narrative suggests. The mix shift toward motorcycles and North American hybrids gives it unusually high cash conversion for an auto OEM, so the stock is really a levered play on fuel prices, yen translation, and a still-resilient hybrid cycle rather than on EV optionality. That is why the guidance raise matters more than the single-quarter beat: it signals the company is monetizing a more profitable mix while competitors are still funding EV reset costs.

The underappreciated risk is China, where this looks structural rather than cyclical. If local ICE/hybrid demand continues to erode, Honda may be forced into deeper capacity rationalization and more aggressive local-platform partnerships, which is a 6-18 month drag on margins and volume quality even if near-term headlines stabilize. Separately, the EV supplier compensation liability is a timing problem today but a real P&L overhang over the next 2-3 quarters; a larger-than-modeled settlement would offset much of the FX tailwind.

Near term, the earthquake creates a supply-chain air pocket that could mute the positive revision trade for days to weeks, especially if tier-2/3 parts shortages extend beyond the restart window. The contrarian miss is that the market may be over-focusing on Honda’s EV losses and underpricing the durability of hybrid demand; the reverse risk is that U.S. gasoline eases or competitors re-accelerate incentives, which would pressure Honda’s U.S. share and margins quickly. Key falsifiers: U.S. hybrid share rolling over, incentives re-expanding, or yen strengthening materially below the current assumption.
