Should Investors Take Profits in GE Vernova After Its Big Run?

GE Vernova’s stock is up 674% since its GE spinoff, supported by historic power-equipment demand tied to AI data centers. In Q2, power segment organic orders rose 134%, gas equipment backlog increased from 100 GW to 116 GW, and it booked 20 GW of new gas contracts, extending agreements through 2031 with a $176B backlog. The company also raised full-year revenue guidance, but valuation is rich at ~34x 2026 and ~30x 2028 forecast EPS, suggesting investors are pricing strong demand into future cash flows.

Analysis

GEV is increasingly a tollbooth on AI power scarcity rather than a conventional industrial. The first-order winner is the vendor that can monetize urgency through slot allocation and service, but the second-order winners are the suppliers that feed large-electrical equipment, switchgear, and field installation capacity; that argues for broader exposure to ETN and PWR rather than chasing only the name that already captured the rerating. The flip side is that regulated utilities and data-center landlords with constrained interconnect capacity may see demand pushed out, not erased, which can shift spend toward behind-the-meter solutions and away from traditional grid-dependent buildouts.

The next 1-3 months should be driven by order quality, margin mix, and whether management can keep converting reservations into shipped equipment without a working-capital squeeze. Backlog is supportive, but it is not cash, and the market is now paying for execution certainty; any slowdown in book-to-bill, cancellations, or lower-than-expected FCF conversion would hit the multiple faster than top-line growth alone can offset. Over 6-18 months, the key risk is that the power bottleneck is solved by load management, storage, more efficient chips, or faster grid upgrades, which would reduce the urgency premium embedded in the stock.

The contrarian view is that consensus may be over-indexed on a straight-line AI power supercycle and underweight the possibility that scarcity economics peak before shipment volumes do. At roughly 30x-plus forward earnings, the stock needs persistent upward revisions, not just a good story; any guidance miss would likely re-rate it toward a more normal industrial multiple. Relative value looks more attractive than outright momentum here: own the broader electrification winners and hedge the single-name duration risk in GEV.
