AI Needs More Than GPUs. These 3 Stocks Are Building Everything Around Them

AI infrastructure winners look set to benefit as power and cooling become bottlenecks: Eaton reported a U.S. data-center backlog of 307GW (~15 years of work at 2025 build rates) versus 12 years previously, with ~20% converting near term. Vertiv posted Q2 2026 revenue +24% to $3.27B, adjusted EPS +60% to $1.52, and raised its full-year revenue outlook to $13.8B–$14.2B (with adjusted EPS $6.65–$6.75). Quanta Services delivered Q1 2026 revenue +26% to $7.87B with electric-infrastructure backlog of $40.1B, positioning the group across the power, thermal, and grid-connection chain.

Analysis

The investable shift here is not “AI wins,” but where the bottleneck rents accrue as hyperscalers move from design spend to physical deployment. That favors the infrastructure layer, but the market is already paying up for it; at these multiples, the trade is less about owning demand and more about whether backlog converts without margin leakage. ETN and PWR look like the cleaner industrial-quality expressions because their revenue is tied to grid and power bottlenecks that are harder to bypass, while VRT is more exposed to customer timing and product mix inside the data hall.

Second-order effects matter more than the headline AI spend cycle: utilities, transformer makers, copper-intensive electrical contractors, and grid interconnect beneficiaries should see a longer runway than chip vendors if power remains the gating factor. The flip side is that these names can de-rate quickly if financing costs stay restrictive or if hyperscalers stretch project timelines; the backlog is visibility, not immunity. In practice, the first warning sign will be order growth slowing before revenue does, since lead times can mask a demand rollover for several quarters.

The contrarian point is that this basket may be becoming the new crowded AI trade. If consensus keeps rotating from GPUs into “picks and shovels,” valuation compression can overwhelm otherwise strong fundamentals, especially for the highest-multiple name. The setup is still constructive over 6-18 months, but near term the better signal will come from backlog conversion and incremental guidance, not the size of the pipeline itself.
