Stocks adrift, oil up as US-Iran halt renewed attacks

Asian equities were mixed as renewed Middle East ceasefire uncertainty lifted Brent crude 0.85% to $72.6 and WTI above 1% to $70.01, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures rose 0.4%. Wolfe Research and BofA highlighted a rotation away from mega-cap AI into smaller cyclical stocks, with investor concern over stretched AI valuations and heavy capital spending. The dollar index held near 101.33, the yen remained weak at 161.77 per dollar, and gold fell 0.4% to $4,072 as markets priced in at least one Fed rate hike this year.

Analysis

The near-term tape looks more like a factor unwind than a clean macro regime shift: crowded AI/mega-cap exposure is vulnerable whenever risk premia widen, and that dynamic can persist through month-end and quarter-end as benchmark-driven rebalancing adds selling pressure. The important second-order effect is that a softer leadership cohort does not necessarily mean a bearish equity setup; it can actually improve breadth by forcing capital into second-order beneficiaries in semis, industrial automation, and select cyclicals that have lagged the AI trade.

The real differentiation is between AI beneficiaries with durable demand pull-through versus those trading on capex enthusiasm. Names tied to infrastructure buildout and actual compute utilization should continue to outperform, but the market is increasingly punishing firms where the cash outlay is visible now and monetization is deferred. That argues for relative longs in profitable picks-and-shovels exposure and caution on hardware names where any guide-down in growth assumptions could trigger a fast multiple reset.

On the macro side, a firmer dollar and residual oil volatility are a headwind for global equities even if headline geopolitical stress cools. A one-step increase in expected Fed tightening mainly works through discount rates and positioning, not just through earnings, so the market can stay range-bound even if geopolitics stabilize. The contrarian view is that this is less a true risk-off move than a narrowing of leadership: if breadth improves while megacap tech de-risks, the index can grind higher despite ugly intraday rotations.
