Essent Group Ltd. Announces Second Quarter 2026 Results and Declares Quarterly Dividend

Essent Group reported Q2 2026 net income of $189.7M ($2.08 diluted EPS) versus $195.3M ($1.93) a year ago, while generating stronger operating volume with mortgage new insurance written of $14.1B vs $12.5B in Q2 2025. The Board declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.35/share payable Sept. 10, 2026 (record Aug. 31). The company also repurchased 5.8M shares for $348M year-to-date through July 31, 2026, supported by $249.7B of mortgage insurance in force as of June 30.

Analysis

ESNT is still a per-share compounding story, but the increment is increasingly financial engineering rather than pure underwriting torque. The combination of aggressive repurchases and a rising dividend means the equity can keep compounding even if core net income flattens; that tends to support multiple stability versus peers that rely on premium growth alone. In the mortgage insurer group, that favors ESNT relative to more rate-sensitive or less well-capitalized names such as NMIH, MTG, and RDN, because buyers are paying for capital deployment discipline as much as earnings.

The cautionary read-through is that loss pressure is normalizing faster than headline EPS suggests. Higher default counts and reserve build do not break the thesis today, but they do cap how far the market should extrapolate buybacks; if credit migration worsens, excess capital gets redirected from repurchases to reserves, and the stock de-rates as a capital-return story. The near-term catalyst is management commentary on persistency, refinance mix, and whether current NIW can be sustained into the next rate leg over the next 1-3 months.

Contrarian view: the market may be underpricing the quality of the capital return stream, but overpricing the durability of current loss ratios. If home price appreciation slows and unemployment ticks up, the reserve trajectory can turn from benign to constraining within 2-3 quarters. The thesis is falsified if NIW falls back below the low-teens billions, default rates keep climbing for another quarter, or PMIERs excess capital starts compressing materially from current levels.
