Why Sandisk Stock Is Soaring Today

Sandisk shares jumped 7.1% (and are up 580% YTD) after its investor day forecast FY2028–FY2030 revenue growing at a mid-to-high-teens rate. Management guided to ~80% non-GAAP gross margins, operating margins approaching ~75%, and ~50% adjusted FCF margin, alongside a plan to return excess cash to shareholders with buybacks (authorization: $15.5B). RBC raised its 1-year target to $1,600 and JPM reinitiated with an $2,250 overweight view, citing NAND positioning for AI inference demand.

Analysis

The market is treating SNDK less like a cyclical memory supplier and more like a long-duration cash compounder. That rerating can persist, but it also creates a higher bar: once the stock is priced off far-dated margin targets, the next leg depends on evidence that supply discipline can outlast the first pricing upcycle. The key second-order issue is not demand — it is whether peers with more balance-sheet flexibility force a reset in NAND economics before the company can scale buybacks into those targets.

Near term, the stock can keep grinding higher on analyst target revisions and buyback optics, but that is a sentiment trade, not a fundamental inflection. The most important falsifier over the next 1-3 quarters is any hint that inventory is rebuilding or that unit growth is coming at the expense of pricing/mix; memory businesses usually lose margin faster than they gain share once the cycle turns. If gross margin and FCF fail to track the path implied by management’s long-dated framework, the multiple can compress quickly because the market is already paying for perfection.

The contrarian view is that consensus may be underestimating how much of the story is self-help versus structural AI demand. If inference-related storage intensity is real, SNDK can outperform, but the more durable winners may actually be the ecosystem names that monetize the capex wave without taking commodity pricing risk. For now, this reads as a strong tactical positive, but not a blind multi-year conviction buy unless the next prints validate that the margin expansion is driven by durable industry discipline rather than a temporary shortage.
