Bluesky was launched as a Twitter rival — but it's far less popular. Now it's eyeing Reddit for inspiration

Bluesky has about 43 million global users versus an estimated 450 million on X, and its daily active posters reportedly fell from a peak of 1.4 million in late 2024 to around 600,000 today. Management says the platform will pivot away from a 'public square' model toward Reddit-style discovery and needs to improve video features and upload speed. The company raised $100 million in Series B funding in April 2025 and has not ruled out ads, but the user-retention trend and competitive positioning remain mixed.

Analysis

Bluesky’s strategic pivot is less a product epiphany than a signal that the winner-take-most battle for the broad public feed is structurally over for smaller networks. The more important question is whether it can become a high-intent discovery layer with better monetization density per user than an open timeline; that would make it a niche winner even if it never regains growth leadership. In practice, this is a move from scale-first to engagement-quality-first, which usually improves retention economics but lowers the probability of explosive MAU re-acceleration.

For RDDT, the competitive read is incrementally positive. Reddit’s value proposition becomes more defensible if another social challenger converges on the same “useful discovery” framing, because it validates the market category while underscoring how hard it is to replicate Reddit’s community depth, search intent, and moderation infrastructure. The second-order risk is that more platforms optimize for structured discovery, shifting some information-seeking traffic away from generic social feeds and further weakening the ad inventory quality on feed-only products.

META looks neutral at first glance, but the implication is that Threads may also be trapped in the same product ceiling: a broad public-square format is a weak differentiator when users already have X for real-time discourse and Reddit for topic-specific discovery. The key catalyst over the next 6-12 months is whether Bluesky can prove that a tighter utility loop supports durable daily use; if it cannot, the model likely stays inside a retention plateau rather than converting to a meaningful monetization story. The main contrarian point is that the market may be underestimating how small the eventual addressable audience is for another general-purpose social layer, which makes the real upside in companies that own intent, not attention.
