SK Hynix posted even stronger growth (revenue +198%, net income +398%) and inked a multiyear Nvidia technology partnership for AI infrastructure. The article frames the setup as cash-generative but highly cyclical and volatile, warning that returns may normalize once supply catches up.

Analysis

The cleanest read-through is not “buy semis,” but “own the bottleneck.” Memory pricing power tends to belong to the few names with constrained output and long qualification cycles, while the rest of the AI stack quietly eats the inflation. That means the second-order losers are not just storage buyers; it is also the AI hardware ecosystem that has to absorb higher bill-of-materials costs, which can show up later as margin pressure or a slower cadence of server deployments.

The key risk is that this is a classic supply response story, and the market usually underestimates how fast cyclical capex turns into future oversupply. The next 1-3 months matter most for guide discipline, contract pricing, and inventory commentary; the 6-18 month risk is a normalization in lead times that compresses margins before volumes roll over. The falsifier is straightforward: if sequential gross margin expansion stalls while capex keeps rising, the trade is already late.

Consensus is probably too comfortable with the idea that “AI memory” is one bucket. HBM deserves a higher multiple than commodity storage because qualification barriers and customer lock-in are stronger, while pure storage remains much more exposed to price competition once capacity catches up. SanDisk looks like the most reflexive part of the basket; if the market is extrapolating current margins into next year, that’s where disappointment should hit hardest.
