Why AeroVironment Stock Skyrocketed Today

AeroVironment shares surged Tuesday after reporting fiscal Q4 revenue up 133% YoY to $641.6M and EBITDA up 127% to $140.1M, aided by BlueHalo and Empirical Systems Aerospace adding $282.3M in sales. Backlog rose 65% YoY to $1.2B, and management projected fiscal 2027 revenue of ~$2.2B with adjusted EPS of $3.02–$3.34, supported by expected $75B U.S. drone spend in 2027.

Analysis

AVAV is the cleanest public-market lever on drone procurement, but the more important signal is that the profit pool is moving from hardware novelty toward mission-critical, repeat-buying systems. That typically benefits the scale players with integration capability and NATO/DoD relationships, while smaller point-solution vendors get squeezed into lower-margin subcontract roles. The second-order winners are likely counter-UAS, sensors, and battle-management software providers that can ride the same budget without taking as much unit-risk.

The market should separate headline growth from earnings durability. A large share of the reported acceleration is acquisition-driven, so the real test over the next 1-3 quarters is whether organic growth and incremental margins hold once integration costs, supply-chain normalization, and purchase-accounting effects fade. If the company cannot convert backlog into cash flow at the projected rate, the stock can de-rate quickly even if defense demand stays strong.

Contrarianly, the crowd may be underestimating how much of this theme is already consensus in aerospace/defense positioning. A lot of capital is being pulled toward AVAV for the same reason every investor likes it: visible end-market demand; that can make the stock more vulnerable to any budget delay, continuing resolution, or procurement rephasing than the fundamentals alone suggest. The key falsifier is not demand, but guide quality: if next quarter shows slower organic growth, weaker gross margin, or weaker FY27 conversion, the multiple can compress 15-20% fast.
