A toxic stew drags stocks lower as we look at what can get the AI trade back on track

Stocks sold off Monday with the Nasdaq down nearly 1.5% as oil jumped after U.S.-Iran strikes, lifting the 10-year Treasury yield above 4.6% following hawkish Fed remarks. Fed Governor Christopher Waller said the Fed may hike if core inflation stays hot, and CME FedWatch puts the July 29 hike odds near a coin flip (vs ~25% a week ago). Separately, Citi raised Corning’s price target to $240 from $225 on AI-data-center optical connectivity and semiconductor/solar tailwinds, but the stock has already fallen ~30% from its June peak as volatility persists.

Analysis

The market is pricing a rare stagflationary impulse: higher crude raises transport and power costs just as the discount rate on long-duration assets re-anchors upward. That is the worst mix for AI leaders because their multiple support depends on falling real yields and uninterrupted hyperscaler capex; if Tuesday's CPI is even modestly hot, the de-rating in NVDA/META/MSFT/AMZN/GOOGL can extend beyond the one-day risk-off move.

Corning is the cleaner relative winner, but only on a pullback: the stock is trading like a leveraged AI proxy despite having a more visible mix of optical-connectivity, packaging, and solar optionality. The second-order risk is that the real capex signal comes from the hyperscalers' guidance, not from sell-side optimism; if Alphabet/Amazon/Microsoft/Meta sound disciplined, GLW's multiple should compress with the rest of the AI basket before fundamentals catch up.

On banks, higher yields are not automatically bullish. A war/oil shock steepens tail-risk around credit and keeps deposit betas sticky, which is why WFC is the weakest setup into earnings, while JPM should prove comparatively resilient. Contrarian take: if CPI comes in benign, the Fed-hike probability spike can unwind quickly and duration/growth names could squeeze higher faster than the macro bears expect; the market may be over-earning the inflation regime shift unless oil disruption persists for months.
