Barclays picks these two names as top EU and Nordic platform plays

Barclays initiated flatexDEGIRO at Overweight and upgraded Avanza to Overweight, while keeping Nordnet at Underweight, citing superior earnings growth and ROE across the online investment platform sector. Barclays raised Avanza’s price target to 420 from 340 Swedish crowns and Nordnet’s to 310 crowns, but sees 5-8% earnings upside for Avanza and more than 20% annual EPS growth for flatexDEGIRO through 2028. Nordnet is viewed as the most expensive at 23x 2027 earnings, with limited upside already priced in.

Analysis

The real signal here is not just relative valuation; it is that the platform model is becoming a duration-sensitive spread trade. When rates fall, cash balances monetize less, but lower discount rates mechanically support long-duration customer-acquisition and wealth-penetration stories, which should favor the cheapest growth asset in the group rather than the most expensive one. That creates a natural hierarchy: the pan-European broker with the largest embedded operating leverage should outperform if the market starts rewarding earnings acceleration over perceived franchise quality.

The second-order effect is competitive pressure on the domestic incumbents. If one player is using cross-border scale and product breadth to attack savings flows while another is trying to defend a premium multiple at home, the margin pool likely gets contested through pricing, product incentives, and marketing spend over the next 2-4 quarters. That matters because the market is currently paying up for the steadier, slower compounder; once growth normalizes, multiple compression can happen fast even without an outright earnings miss.

The contrarian view is that the “saturated market” narrative on the Swedish platform may be too conservative, but not for the reason bulls expect: growth may come less from new retail accounts and more from wallet share expansion and higher engagement as the product mix matures. Conversely, the cheaper broker is exposed to a broader macro and regulatory beta, so if EU savings reforms stall or trading activity weakens, the valuation case weakens quickly. The key timing window is 3-6 months, when sentiment can swing ahead of the next print cycle and rate expectations are repriced.
