Analysis

This is not a demand shock so much as a friction tax on the upgrade cycle. The first-order damage lands on low-end router makers, smart-home device OEMs, and cable operators that eat the support burden from failed installs and returns; the second-order winner is whoever can prove cleaner interoperability and bundle better software/validation, because buyers will pay up for fewer headaches. For the semiconductor layer, the issue is usually margin-neutral to mildly positive over time: more complex certification raises switching costs and tends to reward the incumbents with the strongest platform engineering rather than the cheapest silicon.

For AVGO, the near-term read-through is mixed but not thesis-breaking. If Wi-Fi 7 deployment gets slowed by compatibility complaints, that delays volume ramp and could push some attach-rate benefits a few quarters out, but it also makes premium, better-supported platforms more valuable versus commodity alternatives. The real risk is in the consumer channel, where higher return rates and call-center costs can pressure shelf space and partner sentiment before the technology is broadly standardized.

The contrarian view is that the market may overestimate how much this changes endpoint adoption. Standards transitions almost always create a noisy window of incompatibility, and the likely outcome is a patch of support tickets, not a structural reset in demand. The key catalyst over the next 1-3 months is whether operators and retail channels report material returns or whether the issue is absorbed through firmware updates; over 6-18 months, the relevant test is whether Wi-Fi 7 penetration continues to climb despite the friction, which would argue the concern is operational, not economic.
