Markets were mixed midday: the S&P 500 rose 0.26% to 7,535.12 and the Nasdaq gained 0.81% to 26,083.42 on tech strength, while the Dow slipped 0.19% to 52,401.14 largely due to IBM’s profit warning. IBM’s Q2 pre-announcement flagged weakness in software and infrastructure as customers divert investment toward hardware (servers, storage, memory). Cooling June inflation (CPI 3.5% y/y, CPI -0.4% m/m with gasoline -9.7%) eased bond yields and gave Fed chair Kevin Warsh more room to delay rate hikes, while banks like JPMorgan and Goldman surged after earnings.

Analysis

The cleanest read-through is not “IBM is broken,” but that enterprise spend is tilting from recurring software into hardware-heavy AI infrastructure. That favors semis and adjacent supply-chain names over legacy stack vendors; NVDA is the highest-beta expression, while TSEM is a more valuation-sensitive second derivative if the reallocation broadens beyond hyperscalers.

On the bank side, cooler inflation and softer yields are a short-term risk-on tailwind for JPM and GS through lower discount rates and a friendlier M&A/IP0 backdrop, but the move is not uniformly positive: a faster drift lower in rates can compress future NII expectations for lenders even as capital markets fees improve. In other words, the next 2-6 weeks likely reward trading exposure, but the 3-6 month setup depends on whether growth expectations hold up enough to keep deal flow and credit quality stable.

The contrarian miss is that this may be more company-specific execution noise than a broad AI capex signal. If IBM’s issue is budget timing rather than a true demand inflection, the market may be over-reading one warning into a whole hardware cycle; the thesis is falsified if large-cap software spending reaccelerates or if semiconductor order commentary fails to improve over the next earnings round.

For CLSK, the macro support from lower yields is helpful only as a sentiment beta; there is no direct fundamental confirmation here, so it remains a lower-conviction expression unless risk assets keep extending. The better trade is to own the spend shift, not the broad index move.
