Newgen Q1 FY’27 slides: profit surges 26%, shares slip on mix concerns

Newgen Software Technologies reported Q1 FY’27 revenue of Rs 3,567m (+11.2% YoY) and profit after tax of Rs 628m (+26.3% YoY), with EBITDA margin rising to 15.7% (from 14%) as AI-led optimization improved profitability. However, implementation/services revenue declined on delayed project starts—especially in EMEA—while debtor days rose to 145 days (vs 164 peak in Q4 FY’26), and only 10 new enterprise customers were added (slower than its typical pace). Management guided to full-year EBITDA margins of 23%–25% and expects implementation revenue recovery in Q2–Q3, but the stock fell ~3% post-results amid near-term execution and cash-collection concerns.

Analysis

TSM is still the cleaner expression of the AI capex cycle despite the post-print fade: the market is effectively saying expectations were already high, not that the demand signal is deteriorating. The more important read-through is for the ecosystem — sustained advanced-node demand and packaging intensity should keep utilization tight and support the broader semi-cap chain (ASML, AMAT, LRCX, SMH) over the next 3-12 months unless hyperscaler spending rolls over.

NWGN looks like a classic quality-versus-growth tension: margin expansion is real, but slower implementation activity and weak new-logo momentum usually cap multiple expansion because investors eventually demand evidence that recurring mix converts into durable top-line acceleration. The working-capital profile matters more than headline profit here; if receivables stay elevated, cash conversion becomes the limiting factor and leaves the stock vulnerable to de-rating even if EBITDA holds up. Competitive pressure is likely to come from larger workflow vendors and AI-native point solutions that can win budget in delayed enterprise sales cycles.

Contrarian takeaway: the NWGN pullback may be partially overdone if management is right that delayed projects are merely timing, because the mix shift toward subscription revenue and larger deal sizes improves long-duration visibility. But the burden of proof is now on Q2/Q3 execution, not narrative. For TGT, there is no meaningful direct read-through; this is not a consumer demand event, so any move there would be correlation-driven rather than fundamental.
