BofA Securities highlights Nvidia's NVLink Fusion and the AMD-backed UALink as key technologies for scaling next-generation AI systems. While UALink, an open standard supported by industry giants, aims to challenge Nvidia's dominance, NVLink Fusion expands Nvidia's reach into the networking market, potentially adding ~$12B in TAM. Despite UALink's progress, Nvidia is expected to maintain a technological lead, with its upcoming NVLink 6.0-based Rubin systems outpacing UALink's capabilities, at least until 2027.

Analysis

Bank of America Securities identifies Nvidia's NVLink Fusion and the AMD-backed open-standard Ultra Accelerator Link (UALink) as pivotal interconnect technologies for scaling next-generation AI systems. Nvidia's strategic move with NVLink Fusion involves partially opening its proprietary NVLink intellectual property to select ecosystem partners, thereby expanding its addressable networking market by an estimated $12 billion, encompassing approximately $11 billion from custom accelerators and $1 billion from non-Nvidia ARM CPU systems. This development, according to BofA, reinforces Nvidia's position as a leader in chips, software, and systems. Despite the formation of the UALink consortium—comprising over 70 industry players including AMD, Broadcom, Intel, Google, and Microsoft—aimed at providing an open alternative and challenging Nvidia's dominance from 2027 onwards, Nvidia is expected to maintain a significant technological advantage. The current UALink 1.0 standard supports up to 800GB/s bandwidth per accelerator, which is less than half the 1.8TB/s offered by Nvidia's latest NVLink 5.0. Furthermore, BofA anticipates Nvidia's forthcoming NVLink 6.0-based Rubin systems will preserve this 1-2 generation lead even as UALink compatible systems begin to ramp from 2027. While UALink is a significant development for fostering competition and providing an alternative within the non-Nvidia ecosystem, NVLink, enhanced by Fusion, is poised to remain the leading AI scale-up interconnect for the foreseeable future.
