Hanging On To The Teradata Rollercoaster

Teradata stays a buy as the valuation and balance sheet look supportive, highlighted by margin expansion with non-GAAP operating margin rising to 21.5%. Q2 2026 results were tepid (low single-digit ARR growth), but public cloud ARR reached 45% of total ARR and FY guidance remains firm. Adjusted free cash flow strengthened enough to drive debt reduction and support share repurchases.

Analysis

The investable angle is not growth; it is the transition from a slow-moving software franchise into a high-visibility cash-return story. In a market that typically penalizes low-single-digit ARR, the combination of durable gross margins, debt paydown, and repurchases can support a valuation rerate if management keeps converting accounting earnings into free cash flow. That makes TDC more relevant as a balance-sheet/FCF comp to mature enterprise software names than as a pure product-growth story.

The second-order winner is the equity holder, while the competitive losers are vendors still dependent on land-and-expand growth to defend multiples. As the installed base migrates further into cloud, hyperscaler ecosystems and cloud-native analytics vendors should capture more of the greenfield demand, but that does not automatically translate into share loss that matters for TDC's near-term stock price. The more important mechanism is that slower top-line growth plus rising margin creates an underappreciated “cash harvest” profile, which can outperform if buybacks remain meaningful.

Risk is that the market has already priced the transformation and the AI narrative does not reaccelerate bookings. The falsifier is any deterioration in ARR retention, weaker-than-expected FCF conversion, or a pause in repurchases tied to operating needs; over a 1-3 month horizon, that would cap upside fast. Over 6-18 months, if cloud mix rises but growth stays stuck in the low single digits, the stock could drift back to a value trap multiple unless management proves the AI/cross-sell layer can expand wallet share.
