Bitcoin (BTC) Miners Posted Record Profits in 2Q as HPC Push Accelerated, JPMorgan Says

JPMorgan reported that Bitcoin miners achieved record profits in Q2 2025, driven by higher Bitcoin prices, enhanced operational efficiency, and accelerated investment in High-Performance Computing (HPC). Despite rising production costs and intensifying competition, gross profits remained steady at $2.1 billion with margins near 53%, supported by $590 million in new equity fundraising largely for HPC projects and $900 million in capital expenditures. The bank noted that Bitcoin's average price of $98,500 during the quarter ensured profitability for most operators, with IREN and Cipher Mining demonstrating superior cost efficiency.

Analysis

JPMorgan reported record profits for Bitcoin miners in Q2 2025, driven by an average Bitcoin price of $98,500, enhanced operational efficiency, and significant investment in high-performance computing (HPC). Gross profits remained stable at $2.1 billion, maintaining strong margins near 53%, despite rising production costs and intensifying competition. This indicates a robust market environment for well-positioned miners. Miners accelerated fundraising, securing $590 million in new equity, primarily allocated to HPC projects, alongside $900 million in capital expenditures. This strategic shift towards HPC and efficiency is evident in companies like IREN and Cipher Mining, which reported the lowest power costs per Bitcoin mined at approximately $29,000 and $31,200 respectively. In contrast, Marathon (MARA) exhibited the highest power costs at $56,200 per coin, highlighting significant operational disparities within the sector. The report underscores a widening gap in cost efficiency among operators, with IREN and CleanSpark (CLSK) leading on a fully loaded basis at around $54,000 and $60,000 per coin, while Riot (RIOT) faced higher costs at $81,000. Despite increased network growth and competition, the sector's profitability was sustained by Bitcoin's strength and ongoing efficiency improvements, particularly through HPC adoption. This suggests that strategic investments in advanced infrastructure are critical for maintaining competitive advantage.
