Mizuho reiterates Outperform on EQT stock, cites demand pipeline

Mizuho maintained its Outperform rating on EQT Corp., keeping a $72 price target while modeling Q2 2026 EBITDAX of $1.13B (down ~3% vs consensus) due to softer gas pricing assumptions. At the same time, EQT posted Q1 2026 results with EPS of $2.33 vs $2.14 forecast and revenue of $3.38B (about +5.3% vs expectations), and it has cut debt by roughly $8B since acquiring Equitrans, now nearing a $5B long-term target. Overall, the analyst tone is constructive (top-pick/positive outlook) despite modest earnings drag from gas prices.

Analysis

EQT is transitioning from a simple gas-beta name into a leverage-to-contracts story: as debt approaches target, incremental value should come less from commodity torque and more from the market assigning a higher multiple to lower balance-sheet risk and better visibility on gathering/transport cash flows. That matters because fixed midstream economics can create a second-order margin lift even if Henry Hub only stabilizes rather than rallies.

Near term, the setup is still fragile. If gas pricing stays soft for another quarter, management has little incentive to accelerate volume growth spending, so the bullish pipeline narrative remains optionality rather than an earnings driver; that makes the stock vulnerable to estimate cuts even if the balance sheet improves. The first real catalyst is not headline project talk but signed contracts and evidence that basis differentials are tightening in Appalachia.

The market may be missing that EQT can win without a big commodity move: lower leverage reduces equity risk, and any incremental demand tied to power, data centers, or pipeline debottlenecking should fall through at high incremental margin. Conversely, if gas weakens and capex stays deferred into year-end, the thesis shifts from rerating to capital-return defense. Falsify with another earnings beat that still fails to raise guidance, or with sustained sub-consensus EBITDAX tied to weaker realizations.
