Analysis

This print argues for a lower-quality earnings mix rather than a balance-sheet problem. The real drag is that the franchise is now funding retention and product penetration through bonus economics while net interest income normalizes; that caps shareholder conversion even with excess capital. In other words, the equity story is shifting from “capital-rich compounder” to “high-capital utility with modest growth,” which is usually worth a lower multiple unless fee income can keep compounding at a double-digit rate.

The insurance beat is helpful, but I would treat part of it as mark-to-market beta, not a clean underwriting inflection. That matters because the group’s earnings sensitivity is now more exposed to equity and rates volatility just as credit quality remains benign; if markets wobble, the best-looking segment can mean-revert quickly. The state payments win is strategically positive, but it is a 2027-28 moat signal, not an immediate P&L catalyst, so it should not rescue near-term valuation if guidance stays below the prior year.

Contrarian view: the market may overfocus on the headline year-over-year decline and underappreciate how much capital protection the franchise has. The bigger issue is not solvency, it is that high CET1 no longer automatically translates into equity upside in a cooperative structure. Falsifiers are simple: if Q3 shows NII stabilization, expense growth decelerates, and fee/asset inflows remain strong, the bearish case weakens; if not, any bounce should be faded.
