City Chic FY26 slides: profit surges 92% as turnaround gains pace

City Chic Collective (ASX:CCX) reported FY26 underlying EBITDA of $12.3m, up 92% (driven by a $7.1m, 9.7% reduction in cost of doing business) alongside a 209bps improvement in trading gross margin to 60.6%. Revenue was down modestly to $130.5m (-3.1%), but the balance sheet strengthened with net cash improving 75% to $5.2m and inventory down 11% to $24.1m, after repaying $5m of debt. Shares jumped 18.6% to $0.051 on the turnaround narrative, with early FY27 momentum in ANZ (comp store sales +11.4%) and management expecting a U.S. return to revenue/margin growth in 1H FY27 as the tariff environment stabilizes.

Analysis

The market is rewarding a margin-reset story more than a revenue story: this is what happens when a small retailer proves it can self-fund inventory and stop bleeding cash, especially in a niche where fit data can widen moats. The second-order implication is that the real competitive threat is not broad apparel, but specialty peers with weaker returns control and less precise size-curve merchandising; if returns continue to fall, gross margin leverage can compound even with flat top line.

The GLP-1 angle is directionally supportive but easy to overtrade. In the next 1-3 months, it matters only if it shows up in repeat purchase data and lower return rates, not in management slides; otherwise it is just a narrative overlay. The more important catalyst is whether the U.S. reset converts into cleaner inventory turns and better paid-media efficiency, because that determines whether the business can scale without re-leveraging the balance sheet.

Consensus may be underestimating how little downside there is left in a net-cash microcap that has already de-risked the P&L, while overestimating how quickly the U.S. can become a meaningful growth engine. For liquid US-listed proxies, AMZN is unaffected economically by a wholesale exit of this size, and TGT only sees a second-order basket-share effect that is too small to matter near term. The main falsifier is any slippage in ANZ comps after the promo pullback or a reversal in return-rate improvement; if that happens, the valuation reset story should fade quickly.
