Numbers Don't Lie: Ferrari Is Still a Unicorn and Still a Big Buy Despite Luce Backlash

Ferrari’s Luce electric launch sparked an immediate 6% stock drop, but the shares are now up 10% since the day after the unveiling while the S&P 500 is only slightly lower. CEO Benedetto Vigna (via Bloomberg) said the Luce is receiving orders from existing and new customers and the order book extends to end-2027, with China’s initial allotment of ~1,000 units sold “immediately” at about $586,000 each. Despite online backlash and the departure of chief marketing/commercial officer Enrico Galliera about a month later, early demand signals suggest the EV transition is tracking positively for Ferrari.

Analysis

The market is misreading the signal if it treats this as a generic EV verdict. For a name like RACE, the relevant variable is not whether enthusiasts like the styling; it is whether electrification can be layered onto scarcity without breaking pricing power or expanding production too fast. Early demand behavior suggests the brand can absorb a polarizing launch, which is supportive for the multiple, but the bigger test is whether the electric mix preserves per-unit economics versus the ICE/hybrid fleet over the next 12-24 months.

Second-order, this is more useful as a proof point for luxury than for autos. If a halo product can sell through a limited allocation despite backlash, that is bullish for other high-ASP, low-volume premium vehicles and neutral-to-bearish for mass-market OEMs like F and GM, where EV adoption is still a margin problem rather than a brand problem. BYDDY is the cleaner competitive reference in China: if premium EV appetite remains elastic at very high price points, it supports top-tier Chinese luxury entrants more than it helps legacy Detroit.

The contrarian miss is that outrage can actually reinforce exclusivity in luxury. What would falsify the bullish thesis is not online sentiment, but a shortening of the order book, a guide-down on margins/ROIC, or any evidence that the electric program forces materially higher capex with no offset in ASP. Near term, the stock can mean-revert lower if the launch hype fades; structurally, the real risk is six to eighteen months out if electrification compresses the brand's economics rather than its demand.
