10 best 'mega-airports' in North America for reliability, TSA efficiency and more: The government shutdown hasn't had a 'huge impact' yet, expert says

J.D. Power's 2025 North American Airport Satisfaction Study reports that Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) once again ranked as the top 'mega airport' in North America, followed by Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. The study indicates that high passenger satisfaction is being maintained despite record travel volumes, primarily driven by operational efficiency, clean facilities, and the quality of food, beverage, and retail offerings, which are significant factors in the overall traveler experience.

Analysis

The J.D. Power 2025 North American Airport Satisfaction Study positions Minneapolis-Saint Paul International (MSP) as the leading "mega airport" for the second consecutive year, scoring 660 out of 1,000, with Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County (DTW) ranking second at 649. This sustained high satisfaction occurs despite record passenger volumes, though the annual growth rate is now leveling off, indicating robust operational performance under pressure. The study, based on 30,439 surveys, underscores the critical role of operational efficiency and passenger experience. Key drivers of high satisfaction include fundamental elements like ease of travel, clean terminal facilities, and efficient TSA processes, termed "blocking and tackling." Significantly, food, beverage, and retail offerings are identified as the "biggest swing factor" in overall passenger satisfaction. MSP's success is partly attributed to strong Department of Transportation relations and clear signage, while DTW improved its F&B/retail and offers a less congested environment. While a government shutdown is currently affecting air travel, it has not yet altered the satisfaction rankings, with J.D. Power noting such impacts are generally "episodic." However, potential delays could negatively affect future satisfaction scores if prolonged. The study indirectly highlights the importance of airport infrastructure and service quality for the broader travel and leisure sector, influencing both airport operators and associated businesses.
