Coffee Prices Rise on Weather Concerns

Coffee prices are advancing today, primarily fueled by immediate supply concerns stemming from below-normal rainfall in Brazil's key arabica region and a looming typhoon threat to Vietnam's robusta crop, alongside critically low ICE inventories exacerbated by current US tariffs on Brazilian coffee. This short-term bullish sentiment is, however, counterbalanced by projections for increased global coffee production in 2025/26, particularly from Vietnam, and the potential for the US to lift its 50% tariff on Brazilian imports, which could alleviate supply tightness.

Analysis

Coffee prices are significantly higher today, with December arabica up +3.26% and January robusta up +3.19%, driven by immediate supply concerns. Below-normal rainfall in Brazil's Minas Gerais (75% of average) and the impending Typhoon Kalmaegi threat to Vietnam's robusta crop are key factors. These weather events exacerbate already tight supplies, as ICE-monitored arabica inventories fell to a 19.5-month low and robusta inventories to a 3.5-month low.

The 50% US tariffs on Brazilian coffee are a major contributor to the inventory drawdown and tightening US supplies. However, speculation about a potential lifting of these tariffs, following President Lula's "surprisingly good" meeting with President Trump, introduces a significant variable that could alleviate supply pressure for arabica.

Conversely, robusta prices face pressure from increased Vietnamese supplies, with Jan-Sep 2025 exports up +10.9% year-over-year and 2025/26 production projected to climb +6% to a 4-year high. Globally, the USDA's FAS forecasts a +2.5% increase in world coffee production for 2025/26, reaching a record 178.68 million bags, despite a slight decrease in arabica output.

Further long-term risks include a 71% likelihood of a La Niña system, potentially bringing dry weather to Brazil and harming the 2026/27 arabica crop. Conab also recently cut Brazil's 2025 arabica crop estimate by -4.9% to 35.2 million bags, indicating near-term supply adjustments.
