5 Things to Know Before the Stock Market Opens on Wednesday

U.S. stock futures are slightly lower after a strong Q2, as focus shifts to Fed chair Kevin Warsh speaking at a banking policy conference in Portugal. Nike is falling to a new 12-year low after warning that sales are still struggling. In tech, Anthropic says it reached an agreement with the Trump administration to relaunch access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models. Meanwhile, Shutterstock shares plunge after the Getty merger was called off.

Analysis

NKE looks less like a one-off disappointment and more like evidence that the brand-repair cycle is not catching up with consumer substitution. That matters beyond the stock: weaker sell-through typically forces more promotional intensity at wholesale, which can pressure margins for the athletic category and spill into mall traffic for DKS/FL. The cleanest winners are the faster-growing challengers with fresher product cycles; the risk is that if NKE keeps taking share loss, sector multiples compress as investors question whether premium branding still earns premium pricing.

SSTK losing its strategic backstop is more important than the headline suggests. Once the merger premium disappears, the stock has to trade on standalone cash flow just as AI-native creative tools and synthetic imagery continue to erode pricing power in stock media. That creates a second-order read-through for GETY and other small-cap content licensors: without M&A, the market will likely demand lower terminal value assumptions and less generous takeout optionality.

The Fed-chair speech is a low-conviction macro catalyst unless it contains a clear regulatory or capital-policy signal. A hawkish tone would support financials at the margin and pressure long-duration equity valuations, but this is more of a positioning event than a fundamental shift. Contrarian view: both NKE and SSTK are likely oversold intraday, but absent evidence of margin stabilization or a new strategic path, the burden of proof stays on the bulls.
