Nexa Resources: Upcycle Still Here, Buy On Mine Improvement

Corporate EarningsCompany FundamentalsCommodities & Raw MaterialsAnalyst InsightsCorporate Guidance & Outlook

Nexa Resources is rated a buy, supported by tight zinc supply, strong demand, and a vertically integrated mine-smelter model. Q1 EBITDA margin reached 32% on higher zinc and silver prices plus operational gains at Cerro Lindo and Aripuana. The Cerro Lindo silver streaming step-down should add about $100M of annual cash flow starting in Q2 as Aripuana ramps production.

Analysis

NEXA’s setup is less about a one-quarter earnings beat and more about a step-change in free cash flow quality. The combination of higher unit pricing, improved operating leverage, and a structural cash release from the stream step-down means the market may be underestimating how quickly equity value can re-rate if management converts the incremental cash into debt reduction or buybacks rather than growth capex.

The second-order winner is the zinc supply chain: a company with self-owned concentrate and smelting capacity is better positioned than pure processors if concentrate markets stay tight and treatment charges remain pressured. That also means higher-margin producers with leverage to byproduct silver can out-earn the broader base-metal group even if headline zinc prices flatten, because the mix shift reduces sensitivity to spot metal moves and increases resilience through the cycle.

The main risk is that this is a classic late-cycle commodity trade disguised as an operations story. If global growth rolls over, zinc can gap lower faster than costs can reset, and the market will quickly start capitalizing the cash flow step-up at a lower multiple if it views the improvement as peak-margin rather than durable. The key time horizon is 1-2 quarters for confirmation that the cash flow inflection is being harvested, versus 6-12 months for whether the commodity backdrop stays supportive.

Consensus likely focuses too much on the visible EBITDA margin and too little on balance-sheet optionality. If the market is still pricing NEXA like a volatile cyclical miner, then the step-down in streaming payments creates a hidden de-leveraging story that can support multiple expansion even without higher zinc prices; if not, the move may be underdone because the incremental cash flow should be worth materially more than the headline annual figure suggests once debt paydown reduces equity risk.
