Dell Is Still Cheap

Dell reported Q1 revenue up 88% YoY to record levels, with AI server demand lifting revenue and a soaring backlog. ISG revenue surged 181% and margins expanded, helping ease concerns about commoditization. Dell also raised FY2027 guidance to 47% revenue growth and 55%+ operating income growth, signaling sustained momentum; the news is likely supportive for the stock.

Analysis

This is less a one-quarter earnings story than a credibility reset for the AI hardware stack: if Dell can keep converting backlog while expanding margins, the market will start treating the name as a recurring infrastructure beneficiary rather than a cyclical PC OEM. The key second-order effect is that stronger AI server demand lifts not just Dell, but the entire adjacent ecosystem — GPU attach, networking, power, cooling, and memory — while forcing slower-moving legacy infrastructure vendors to compete on price for non-AI spend.

The near-term winner is Dell’s balance sheet and multiple. A visible backlog reduces estimate dispersion for the next 1-2 quarters, but the real upside is 6-18 months: if AI systems remain scarce, Dell can keep mixing toward higher-value configurations and defend operating leverage. The main loser is HPE, which has more exposure to traditional enterprise refresh cycles and less obvious evidence of AI-driven margin expansion; generic server ODMs also face margin compression if hyperscalers push harder on price.

The contrarian risk is that investors may be over-indexing on revenue growth and underestimating the working-capital and pricing consequences of a hardware supercycle. If backlog is concentrated in a handful of large customers, Dell could be financing growth with lower future margin quality, and any normalization in order flow would hit the stock quickly. The thesis is falsified if next-quarter AI server gross margin stalls, backlog conversion slows, or management stops raising medium-term operating income guidance.
