Zacks Industry Outlook Wayfair and Carvana

E-commerce sales rose 9.8% YoY in 1Q26 (2.7% sequentially), reaching ~16.9% of total U.S. retail, but the article flags that growth has moderated amid wars, tariffs, and supply-chain disruptions. It highlights rate sensitivity for Wayfair and Carvana, noting FOMC deliberations are “not supportive,” while using cost cuts and logistics/technology-led share gains to argue earnings resilience (Wayfair Q1 EBITDA margin 5.2%). For Carvana, unit volumes grew 40% for the sixth straight 40%+ quarter, though margins were compressed by wholesale-to-retail spread lag.

Analysis

Near term, this is a rates-and-credit story more than a pure share-gain story. W and CVNA are the most exposed to consumers deferring big-ticket purchases and to financing conditions; if long rates and auto/home credit stay sticky, their operating leverage works in reverse even if traffic stays healthy. By contrast, AMZN, SHOP and GOOGL are better positioned to capture the tooling, fulfillment and ad-spend layers of commerce, which should hold up better than discretionary merchandise demand.

Second-order effects favor scaled platforms over smaller merchants and suppliers. Tariff volatility, freight resets and fragmented sourcing raise working-capital needs, so the market should continue rewarding balance-sheet strength and logistics density rather than just top-line growth. That is constructive for AMZN/SHOP and still only conditionally constructive for W/CVNA, whose multiple expansion depends on an easier macro backdrop.

The contrarian miss is that ecommerce share gains do not automatically translate into stock outperformance when the factor regime is hostile to duration and leverage. For W, the key falsifier is a real housing turnover rebound or a clear mortgage-rate rollover; for CVNA, it is sustained re-expansion in wholesale-to-retail spreads plus easier auto credit. Absent that, recent strength in the sector is more likely to be sold into than chased on a 1-3 month horizon, with a cleaner 6-18 month expression through relative-value longs in the platform names rather than the rate-sensitive merchandisers.
