Why Etoro Stock Is Plummeting This Week

Despite a Q2 beat (adjusted EPS $0.68 vs $0.61 expected; sales $229M vs ~$225.7M; revenue +9% YoY), eToro shares were down 17.9% for the week. The company also agreed to buy U.S. trading platform TradeZero for $231M, but investors remain cautious about the acquisition and outlook. July data raised concerns: funded accounts rose +18% to 4.32M while assets under administration fell 5% YoY to $18.5B and crypto activity saw drawdowns, keeping the stock under near-term pressure.

Analysis

The market is discounting the quarter because the forward revenue engine looks weaker than the headline beat suggests. Funded-account growth with declining assets under administration is a classic sign that user acquisition is happening at lower wallet share, which pressures monetization per account and can offset operating leverage quickly if crypto turnover stays soft. In that setup, the next leg of downside is less about one quarter and more about a lower sustainable take-rate assumption.

The TradeZero deal changes the framing from “organic growth platform” to “buying activity,” which is often a late-cycle move for retail brokers. If the acquisition is cash-funded, it trims balance-sheet flexibility; if stock-funded, it adds dilution into a name already being repriced on weaker forward metrics. Either way, it pulls ETOR closer to U.S. day-trading competition, where HOOD and IBKR have clearer scale advantages and better proof of recurring monetization.

The key catalyst path is the next 4-8 weeks of monthly platform data and the deal-financing detail. A rebound in crypto volatility or a sharp inflection in AUA would quickly challenge the bearish read, but absent that, the stock can stay under pressure because investors are paying for optionality that is not yet showing up in monetizable flow. The contrarian view is that the selloff may already reflect a lot of deal skepticism, so a clean confirmation that TradeZero is modestly financed and accretive could force a relief rally.
