Calumet (CLMT) reported Q2 2026 Adjusted EBITDA with tax attributes of $175.2M, led by Specialty Products & Solutions at $161.7M, while Net Loss of $95.9M was driven by $163.6M of non-cash RINs mark-to-market expenses. The company reduced restricted group leverage below 4.0x and retired $115M of debt in July, including a $100M redemption of 9.75% senior notes due 2028, supported by $90M cash flow from operations. Strategically, Montana Renewables delivered $17M adjusted EBITDA despite >$40M foregone margin during the MaXTA-150 downtime and is targeting SAF run-rate growth from ~60M gallons now to 120–150M gallons by spring 2027 and 200M gallons by 2028.

Analysis

The market mechanism here is leverage conversion, not just earnings beat optics. If CLMT can keep specialty/base-oil margins elevated while funding the SAF buildout from internal cash, the equity stops trading like a distressed cyclic and starts looking like a self-funding asset with an embedded development option. That matters because the incremental dollar of EBITDA is now flowing first to debt reduction, which can pull the multiple higher even if commodity conditions merely stay “good enough.”

Second-order, this is negative for capital-intensive SAF developers and any peer relying on greenfield economics: CLMT is proving you can repurpose existing assets and still move to scale, which compresses the moat around projects that need large upfront capex. The base-oil tightness also supports the specialty complex for several quarters, but that’s a supply shock, not a permanent reset; once outages normalize and pricing catches up, some of this margin should mean-revert. The key question for the next 1-3 months is whether Q3 shows a clean run-rate step-up that validates management’s normalized EBITDA bridge.

Contrarian view: the reported net loss is noise, but it also highlights that headline accounting can stay ugly even as cash generation improves, so the stock can remain hostage to investor skepticism until leverage is visibly below 3x. The bullish thesis fails if the DOE/asset reconfiguration slips, if MRL margins fade before the winter switch, or if specialty pricing rolls over faster than inventory unwind. In that case, CLMT reverts to a low-visibility refiners-plus story rather than a rerating candidate.
