Tech led a broad risk-off session, with the Nasdaq Composite falling 0.97% to 25,678.82 while the S&P 500 slipped 0.26% and the Dow Jones rose 0.17%. Semiconductor names, including Broadcom and Micron, sold off sharply before recovering some losses, while Apple fell almost 4% and Microsoft declined despite a partnership announcement. J.M. Smucker rose more than 10% on earnings as investors rotated away from high-multiple tech ahead of key CPI data, Middle East geopolitical concerns, and a major SpaceX IPO.

Analysis

This looks less like a clean “tech is broken” signal and more like a positioning air pocket after a crowded leadership trade. The important second-order effect is that semis and mega-cap platforms are being de-rated together, which means the market is starting to question the durability of AI capex ROI rather than just rotating between names. That matters because once investors cut exposure to the “picks and shovels” layer, the next marginal seller often becomes the software and cloud beneficiaries that were implicitly funded by the same AI narrative.

The selloff is also creating a temporary dispersion regime: high-duration growth, speculative quantum, and lower-quality AI proxies are getting hit hardest, while earnings-supported defensives and idiosyncratic winners can outperform on the same tape. If that persists for 1-3 sessions into CPI, the market may be signaling that rates volatility, not fundamentals, is the real catalyst. In that case, any relief rally in semis is likely to be sold unless inflation data meaningfully softens real yields and front-end rate expectations.

The more interesting trade is that concentration risk is now becoming a policy and index-flow issue, not just a valuation issue. If breadth continues to improve away from the biggest AI winners, passive and trend-following flows can mechanically reduce pressure on the mega-caps, but that also caps upside for the group until leadership narrows again. For the next 2-4 weeks, the setup favors relative-value over outright beta: the market is repricing who deserves multiple premium, not abandoning equities wholesale.
