VentureBeat’s June survey of 573 enterprise technical leaders finds “agentic” deployments are outpacing controls: 54% reported an agent security incident or near-miss in the last 12 months, and 50% saw a shipped agent pass internal evals but still cause customer-facing failure at least once. Cost/compute management also looks weak, with 86% of GPU operators using 50% or less capacity and only 44% rigorously tracking compute cost vs. returns. Enterprises plan active vendor changes across agent control layers over the next 12 months (57%–64% depending on layer), suggesting near-term budget pressure for evaluation, identity, credential scoping, and real-world outcome testing before scaling.
The market is still pricing the AI cycle as a compute story, but the evidence here says the next dollar is more likely to go into remediation than expansion. If customers are auditing utilization and agent controls before they scale, incremental demand for new GPUs should slow for 1-3 quarters, which is a direct headwind to NVDA and a smaller but real one to AMD. The first-order reaction may be muted because buyers already committed capex, but the second-order effect is that future orders get pushed out until ROI can be measured at the workload level.
The clearest beneficiaries are the platforms that can bundle governance, identity, retrieval, and orchestration into existing enterprise relationships. That favors MSFT, GOOGL, and AMZN more than point-solution vendors because control-layer spend is easier to attach to current cloud contracts than to rip-and-replace after a failure. By contrast, neoclouds such as CRWV face a conversion problem: enthusiasm for evaluate-now, buy-later does not translate into durable revenue unless utilization and workload stickiness improve.
The contrarian read is that the consensus is overestimating autonomous-agent monetization and underestimating how much of current spend is really cleanup. If most deployments are still single-step wrappers, the buildout is less of a greenfield TAM expansion and more of a mix shift toward software controls and away from raw inference hardware. That makes the next 6-12 months less about model performance headlines and more about whether enterprises can prove production ROI; if utilization stays sub-50% and autonomous share does not rise, the compute trade stays vulnerable.
