Thomson Reuters: 'Buy' This Dividend Aristocrat While It's On Sale

Thomson Reuters (TRI) was reiterated as 'Buy' after a 10% post-earnings dip, despite robust results and raised guidance. Recurring revenue increased 9% YoY to 82% of total, supported by AI-enabled products, while the forward P/E sits well below the company’s historical average—suggesting potential for double-digit total returns.

Analysis

This looks less like an AI story and more like a high-quality recurring-revenue compounder being rerated after an earnings reset. For a business with subscription-like cash flows, a 10% drawdown matters mainly if it creates a better entry into the next 12 months of compounding; the key question is whether the market is underestimating how much of the AI layer can be monetized versus merely used to defend retention. If AI is attached to workflow, it should support pricing power and lower churn; if it is just a feature, the benefit is mostly defensive and the multiple should stay capped.

The most important second-order effect is competitive. In legal, tax, and professional information, the real risk is not share loss to a direct incumbent so much as bargain-priced AI-native point solutions that attack the lower end of the workflow stack first. That creates a “good enough” substitution risk over 6-18 months, but only if customers can unbundle content from workflow. TRI’s strong recurring mix should blunt that near term, yet it also means any slowdown in net retention would hit the multiple quickly because the name trades more like a quality bond proxy than a cyclical.

The near-term setup is supportive, but the catalyst path matters: the next 1-3 months are about whether management can prove AI is raising wallet share and not just supporting guidance. If the next print shows durable ARR/recurring growth and incremental margin leverage, the stock can rerate back toward its historical multiple band; if not, the post-earnings dip may simply have been a de-risking event. The contrarian concern is that consensus may be overpaying for the AI narrative while underweighting the slower, more important metric: renewal quality across the installed base.
