Indian Shares Edge Lower As IT Stocks Drag On Earnings Concerns

Indian stocks were subdued as markets awaited the next U.S.-Iran talks in Doha, with fears that any Strait of Hormuz escalation could disrupt shipping and renew energy/inflation and interest-rate concerns. Sensex slipped 0.2% to 76,560 and Nifty fell 0.2% to 23,897, while IT names dropped 1–2% as focus shifted to June-quarter earnings. Yes Bank slid ~1% on a plan to raise up to Rs. 16,000 crore via equity and debt, and SIS tumbled 3.4% after approving a buyback of up to Rs. 120 crore.

Analysis

The real macro transmission is not oil beta alone; it is India’s imported-inflation shock path. A credible Hormuz scare would hit the INR, lift domestic fuel inflation, and reduce the probability of RBI easing in the next 1-2 quarters, which is a cleaner trade than trying to handicap the headline itself. That makes rate-sensitive, funding-dependent businesses more vulnerable than fee-heavy franchises, while banks with stronger deposit franchises should hold up better than NBFCs or leveraged consumption proxies.

For HDB, the chairman change is not a thesis event; the larger issue is whether tighter liquidity and slower system growth compress loan growth more than they help margins. Relative to the broader financials, HDB still screens as a quality shelter if macro risk rises, but the upside is more about defensive rotation than absolute re-rating. For INFY, the pre-earnings weakness may be partly macro noise, but if oil-driven inflation keeps global clients cautious, deal conversion and discretionary spend are the key watch items rather than currency translation.

The contrarian view is that the market may be overpricing a negotiation failure before any shipping data confirms disruption. If Doha produces even a partial de-escalation, the first move should unwind quickly in India cyclicals and energy-sensitive names; conversely, a real supply interruption would take weeks to show up in domestic inflation prints and earnings revisions. NDAQ has no direct event here, but any sustained rise in oil-driven yields would be a modest headwind for multiple expansion across growth assets globally.
