Broadcom Vs. Marvell: Why Broadcom's Custom Silicon Dominance Crushes Marvell's Premium-Priced AI Growth

Artificial IntelligenceCompany FundamentalsCorporate EarningsCorporate Guidance & OutlookAnalyst InsightsAntitrust & Competition

Broadcom’s Q2 FY2026 revenue surged to $22.187B (+47.9% YoY) driven by AI semiconductor revenue of $10.80B (+143% YoY), and it guided Q3 AI semi revenue to ~$16.0B (>200% YoY). Marvell posted Q1 FY2027 revenue of $2.418B and a 27% YoY gain in its Data Center segment to $1.833B (76% of revenue), citing “exceptional AI-related bookings,” particularly across 800G/1.6T optics and Ethernet switches. The piece contrasts AVGO’s more diversified, lower forward P/E (~32) valuation versus MRVL’s much richer forward P/E (~66) after a ~251% YTD rally, with next moves hinging on whether Broadcom validates its hyperscaler pipeline and whether Marvell’s optics/XPU ramps convert bookings into margin expansion.

Analysis

AVGO is the cleaner way to own the AI infrastructure trade because it monetizes the bottleneck hyperscalers actually care about: custom compute plus the network fabric around it. That creates better pricing power and a higher-quality mix than a merchant-component story, while also giving AVGO more leverage if hyperscalers continue substituting away from generic GPUs for workload-specific silicon. By contrast, MRVL is participating in the same capex wave, but it is more exposed to execution risk on a narrower set of interconnect wins and to budget reallocation if customers prioritize compute over optics.

The second-order issue is valuation fragility. MRVL’s premium multiple requires not just growth, but sustained margin expansion and clean conversion of acquired capability into repeatable design wins; any slip in 1.6T ramp timing or gross margin trajectory will compress the stock faster than the top-line model implies. AVGO has its own catalyst test, but its larger free-cash-flow base and software exposure make it more resilient if AI spend normalizes or if hyperscaler procurement becomes less uniform.

Over the next 1-3 months, the main catalyst is whether guidance translates into visible backlog conversion rather than just narrative-driven bookings. Over 6-18 months, the key debate is whether custom silicon becomes a durable share shift or simply a way for cloud customers to arbitrage near-term capex, in which case the stronger balance sheet and software mix at AVGO should keep compounding while MRVL’s multiple mean-reverts. The consensus may be underestimating how asymmetric that setup is: AVGO can miss modestly and still look fine, while MRVL needs near-perfect execution to defend its valuation.

The clean trade is a relative-value long AVGO / short MRVL basket, entered on any post-earnings strength in MRVL or pullback in AVGO. That pair expresses the thesis that AI demand is real but the market is overpaying for the less diversified beneficiary. Falsifiers: AVGO missing its next AI-semi guide or MRVL showing accelerating gross margin expansion and a step-up in booked demand beyond optics.
