Goldman Sachs says investors are reassessing corporate credit positioning as higher real rates collide with an elevated AI-related supply pipeline. It notes BBB-rated debt has outperformed AAs/As, leading the firm to favor moving down-in-quality—favoring Bs over BBs in EUR IG due to expected acceleration of AI supply in the region—while keeping CCCs underweight (previously neutral) given idiosyncratic credit selection needs.
The market is still treating “quality” as a one-way bet, but in a higher-real-rate regime the dominant variable is duration, not just default risk. That means the safest-looking balance sheets with the thinnest spreads are often the worst risk-adjusted carry, while BBBs and lower-rated IG can outperform because they retain enough spread to absorb rate volatility. The second-order loser is any portfolio or benchmark crowded into AA/A paper: it bleeds on price even if fundamentals hold, and active managers will be forced to chase incremental yield down the capital structure.
The more interesting spillover is technical: elevated AI-related issuance is not just a sector story, it is a duration-supply story that can keep European IG cheap for months if supply lands in the same maturity buckets as existing BBB demand. That creates relative-value pressure on passive IG vehicles and on insurers/pension-style accounts that are benchmark-constrained but underhedged on rates. A reversal needs either a meaningful fall in real yields or a clear slowdown in high-grade supply; absent that, spread tightening is likely to be capped even if fundamentals remain benign.
Consensus is probably overestimating the safety of “high quality” and underestimating the fragility of CCCs, which are only attractive when dispersion is cheap and financing windows are open. The cleaner expression is not a blanket long-credit view, but a duration-adjusted quality rotation: favor intermediate BBB exposure over long AA/A duration, and avoid reaching for CCC carry unless you have genuine idiosyncratic edge. If rates back up another 25-50 bps or IG supply stays heavy into the next issuance window, the underperformance of long-duration quality should persist.
