Big week coming up with PCE, Nvidia earnings and then Jackson Hole. Here's what to expect

U.S. 30-year Treasury yields surged to multi-decade highs and stayed elevated even after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said buybacks of long-dated bonds would be doubled starting in September, underscoring worsening debt/inflation concerns as the Fed stays tight-lipped. Investors will focus on next Wednesday’s July PCE (headline +0.20% m/m vs +0.30% in June; core +0.20% vs +0.13%, core annual 3.2% vs 3.3%) and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole message for any hints on the path to 2% PCE. Nvidia earnings are also framed as a potential near-term catalyst after a weak week for tech (Nasdaq ~-2% and semiconductor ETF ~-5%), with the market watching guidance/AI and any comments on the Rubin chip and China exposure.

Analysis

The market’s main problem is no longer the policy rate; it is the term premium. If long-end yields stay pinned near recent highs, the first victims are high-duration equities: software, internet, and premium consumer names whose cash flows are pushed far into the future. That argues for relative underperformance in CRM, VEEV, INTU, ULTA, BBY and the semis complex except for the handful of names that can still show direct AI capex monetization.

Next week is a binary setup for NVDA because it can either validate the AI spend cycle or expose that the trade has become valuation-first, fundamentals-second. A clean beat alone may not be enough; the key is whether management sounds comfortable with near-term demand durability and China exposure. If guidance is merely good, the stock can still outperform while the rest of semis lag, because the market will likely keep using NVDA as the only credible growth hedge against rising discount rates.

The consensus is probably overestimating how much a soft PCE or a measured Jackson Hole tone can repair risk appetite. If the 30-year remains elevated, any relief rally should fade within days, not months, because higher borrowing costs and fiscal anxiety are a structural headwind. The true reversal signal is not rhetoric but a sustained break lower in real yields; absent that, this is a sell-the-rip environment for rate-sensitive growth and discretionary retail, with semis only selectively resilient.
