Shell and mid-cap oil companies drive market gains in London

Oil stocks, including Shell (+1.4%), BP (+0.5%), and Kosmos Energy (+4.3%), drove gains in the FTSE 100 and 250 amid rising crude prices, with Brent holding near $75 a barrel due to ongoing Middle East tensions. Santos' shares surged 11% following a A$30 billion takeover proposal from an ADNOC-led consortium, fueling speculation of further M&A activity in the energy sector. Analysts suggest a wider Israel-Iran conflict could push oil prices above $100, though diplomatic efforts are currently tempering a sharper rally.

Analysis

Oil company shares significantly contributed to gains in the FTSE 100 and 250, with the FTSE 100 rising 41 points to 8,892 in morning trade. This performance was primarily driven by firm crude oil prices, as Brent crude held near $75 a barrel—its highest level in ten weeks—amid continued geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly the Israel-Iran conflict. Specific stock gains included Shell PLC up 1.4%, BP PLC up 0.5%, Harbour Energy PLC up 1.5%, Ithaca Energy PLC up 2.3%, and Kosmos Energy Ltd jumping 4.3%. Further stimulating sector interest was the announcement of a A$30 billion (£14.4bn) takeover proposal for Australia-listed Santos from a consortium led by an Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) subsidiary, causing Santos shares to surge 11% and sparking speculation of increased merger and acquisition activity. Analysts, such as Kathleen Brooks at TXB, noted that a significant widening of the Middle East conflict could push oil prices towards or above $100 a barrel, although Donald Trump's reported efforts to moderate Israeli actions and the avoidance of striking US targets by both Israel and Iran, as highlighted by Deutsche Bank’s Jim Reid, are currently tempering a more aggressive rally. Kosmos Energy's shares have notably risen over 30% in the past fortnight, following its partnership agreement with Tullow Oil in Ghana, indicating company-specific factors also influencing stock performance.
