Earnings call transcript: Lupin posts record Q1 2026 revenue but misses EPS

Lupin reported record Q1 FY2027 revenue of INR 82.77B (+32% YoY) and EBITDA margin expansion to 30% (+340 bps YoY), beating revenue expectations of INR 78.54B (+5.39%), but EPS came in at 28.7 vs 29.24 (−1.85%), driving shares down ~0.9% to $2,363.5 in pre-market. The company warned of temporary U.S. pressure, guiding U.S. revenue to $250M–$280M per quarter for coming quarters due to competition in tolvaptan and mirabegron before growth resumes in FY2028. Net cash fell to INR 2,831 crore (from INR 4,636 crore in March) mainly due to the VISUfarma acquisition, contributing to a balanced but cautious investor read-through.

Analysis

The market is likely underpricing the timing mismatch here: the business is firing on all cylinders now, but the next 2-3 quarters are a digestion phase as U.S. exclusivity rolls off and the mix shifts away from the highest-margin products. That creates a classic “good quarter, lower forward multiple” setup: headline beats may not protect the stock if sell-side models start cutting FY27/FY28 EPS on U.S. price erosion and rising opex. In the near term, competitors with cleaner domestic growth and less U.S. concentration should screen better on relative performance.

The bigger second-order effect is that Lupin’s pipeline is no longer a story of optionality alone; it is becoming a capital allocation question. The company is deliberately sacrificing near-term cash conversion for respiratory, injectables, biosimilars and India innovation, which should expand its addressable market, but only if approvals and channel access arrive on schedule. If approvals slip by even 6-9 months, the valuation support from the future pipeline compresses quickly because current earnings power is likely to trough before the new launches scale.

Contrarian view: consensus may be too focused on the EPS miss and not enough on the structural shift in mix toward harder-to-copy products. But the opposite risk is also real: investors may be over-rotating into 2028-2030 promise and underestimating how much of the near-term base business is still vulnerable to generic price deflation. The key falsifier is U.S. revenue holding materially above the guided run-rate or margins staying near 25% despite competitive pressure; if that happens, the de-rating thesis fails and the stock can re-rate on pipeline credibility.
