Ark Invest's Cathie Wood Believes Robotaxi Will Drive Tesla Stock to $2,600 in 5 Years. There's Just 1 Problem With That.

Cathie Wood of Ark Invest continues to project a $2,600 price target for Tesla within five years, driven by its Robotaxi business; however, this prediction faces challenges as Tesla lags behind Waymo (Alphabet's autonomous driving unit) in autonomous driving technology, with Waymo already providing 250,000 weekly paid driverless rides and operating at Level 4 autonomy, while Tesla's self-driving technology is at Level 2. Given Waymo's current lead and the hurdles to scaling Robotaxi profitably, analysts suggest Ark's aggressive revenue projections for Tesla's Robotaxi and the associated price target appear unlikely within the stated timeframe.

Analysis

Cathie Wood of Ark Invest maintains a $2,600 five-year price target for Tesla (TSLA), heavily predicated on the rapid success of its Robotaxi business, which Ark projects will account for 63% of Tesla's future revenue. However, this forecast faces considerable skepticism due to Tesla's current positioning in the autonomous vehicle landscape. Alphabet's Waymo unit is significantly ahead, already operating a paid, driverless ride-hailing service with Level 4 autonomy, conducting over 250,000 weekly rides, and expanding to more cities. In contrast, Tesla's self-driving technology is at Level 2, requiring continuous driver supervision, and its Robotaxi service is yet to launch, with an initial deployment of approximately 10 vehicles planned. Tesla's own head of self-driving, Ashok Elluswamy, acknowledged Waymo is likely a couple of years ahead. Furthermore, Waymo, despite its lead, is part of Alphabet's 'Other Bets' segment which reported $450 million in revenue against a $1.2 billion operating loss in Q1 2025, underscoring the substantial financial investment and time required to scale and achieve profitability in the autonomous ride-hailing sector. This financial reality, coupled with potential regulatory hurdles and liability concerns for Tesla, suggests that achieving the massive scale and profitability for Robotaxi needed to justify Ark's $8.2 trillion enterprise value projection for Tesla within five years is a formidable challenge.
