Nike stumbles as China woes, cautious outlook temper turnaround hopes

Nike shares fell 3.5% premarket after its Q4 revenue fell 1% despite a modest beat, with double-digit China declines adding to investor concerns. The company guided to further revenue contraction through H1 FY2027, implying no earnings growth until at least H2’27 as it prioritizes marketplace health amid tariff pressure, geopolitical uncertainty, and cautious consumer spending. European peers Adidas and Puma were also pressured, each down more than 1%, as markets repriced the pace of Nike’s turnaround under CEO Elliot Hill.

Analysis

Nike’s slow-reset posture is a relative positive for competitors with cleaner inventory and better product momentum: Adidas and Puma can keep taking shelf space while Nike is preoccupied with channel repair. The second-order effect is that wholesale partners may see near-term mix pressure from Nike markdown clearance, but they also get a cleaner replenishment cycle later; the real loser is Nike’s own earnings power, because every quarter of “health over growth” delays operating leverage and keeps the multiple vulnerable.

The key risk is that the market is underestimating how long the China recovery can stay impaired once inventory normalization becomes the gating item. In the next 1-3 months, the trade will be driven less by management commentary and more by sell-side estimate cuts, channel checks, and whether gross margin inflects enough to offset revenue declines; if not, the stock can de-rate further even without another demand shock. Over 6-18 months, tariff/geopolitical noise matters mainly through gross margin and working capital, not top-line headlines.

Contrarianly, the bearish consensus may be too focused on the lost sales and not enough on the possibility that a slower, cleaner reset eventually restores wholesale pricing and reduces promo intensity. But at ~22x forward earnings with no clear earnings growth until H2’27, the burden of proof is high; the stock needs evidence of China stabilization and faster product acceptance, not just better marketing language. Failing that, any rally should be sold as a multiple compression story, not a fundamentals rerating.
