Citizens initiates Bitdeer stock with outperform rating on mining platform

Citizens initiated Bitdeer Technologies Group at Market Outperform with a $35 price target, implying about 103% upside from the $17.23 share price. The note highlights Bitdeer’s 3 GW power portfolio and AI/cloud expansion plans, though Q1 2026 results were mixed with EPS of -$0.68 versus -$0.37 expected and revenue of $188.9 million versus $199.51 million consensus. May bitcoin production rose 370% year over year to 921 coins, and self-mining hash rate increased to 70.2 EH/s from 13.6 EH/s.

Analysis

BTDR is increasingly a hybrid cash-flow story: miners value it on near-term hash-rate growth, but the real optionality is the conversion of stranded power into higher-multiple GPU/HPC revenue. That creates a classic rerating path where each incremental MW leased for AI/colocation can matter more than incremental BTC production, because the market typically pays much higher EV/MW and EV/EBITDA for contracted compute than for merchant mining cash flows.

The second-order winner set extends beyond BTDR. If management can monetize power into AI infrastructure, the relevant comparables shift toward data-center developers, utility-backed power platforms, and edge colocation names rather than pure miners; that can compress the valuation gap for scarce-power assets across the group. The flip side is that this story is capital intensive and execution-heavy: any delay in grid interconnects, cooling retrofits, or customer preleases pushes out the de-risking window and forces the equity back to being judged on thin-margin mining economics.

Near term, the stock is likely to trade as a high-beta macro/crypto lever, not a fundamentals compounder. That means the primary catalysts are exogenous: BTC price, risk appetite, and whether investors rotate back into speculative AI infrastructure. A sustained bid in BTC helps the miner cash-flow leg, but a stronger catalyst is evidence of contracted HPC leasing at the Washington/Tennessee sites; without that, the upside multiple is vulnerable to being cut as the market discounts the 2028 EBITDA bridge.

The contrarian read is that the market may be underestimating how much embedded option value sits in the power portfolio, but overestimating how quickly it monetizes. In other words, the stock can be cheap on a long-dated sum-of-the-parts basis while still being a poor near-term hold if financing dilution, build-out delays, or crypto volatility hit before the AI conversion narrative is proven.
