ASE Technology Holding: Rising Earnings, Improving Margins, And Robust Demand Fuel Upside

ASE Technology Holding was reiterated as a “buy” as advanced packaging/testing demand accelerates with AI-driven semiconductor complexity. Q2 revenue rose 15.5% YoY to nearly $6B, while adjusted EPS nearly tripled and ATM segment revenue increased 36.3% YoY. Margins are expanding quickly, with Q4 ATM gross margin expected to clear prior ceilings and LEAP revenue tracking above targets.

Analysis

The market is likely underappreciating how much of the current upside is margin-led rather than just volume-led. In advanced packaging, incremental utilization and mix can reprice earnings much faster than a normal semiconductor cycle because pricing power sits with the scarce bottleneck capacity, not the chip designer. That makes ASX a cleaner beneficiary of AI complexity than broad semiconductor exposure: if packaging remains the constraint, every additional dollar of customer AI capex should convert disproportionately into gross profit over the next 2-4 quarters.

Second-order winners are substrate, ABF board, and test-equipment ecosystems, while the main loser is any competitor still stuck in legacy packaging economics or with weaker access to AI programs. TSMC’s packaging stack can cap some long-run share gains for OSATs, but it also validates the structural scarcity story; that keeps the whole advanced-packaging chain tight. The key risk is that a large share of current demand is customer qualification and inventory pre-build, not sustained end-demand, so the next catalyst is not more revenue growth per se but whether margin expansion persists into the next two earnings prints.

The contrarian view is that the stock may be getting credit for a multiyear AI runway when part of the move is simply a cyclical margin inflection from a tight supply base. If hyperscalers accelerate in-house packaging or if foundry-led capacity opens faster than expected, ASX’s pricing power could normalize quickly. Watch for any sign that Q4 guidance is driven by mix and backlog rather than firm customer pull-through; that would be the main falsifier over a 3-6 month horizon.
