Aeva technologies CEO Soroush Dardashti sells $7.3m in company stock

AEVA shares ended largely higher as traders pared rate-hike bets after the July CPI report. The stock’s insider activity includes CEO Soroush Salehian Dardashti selling ~$7.34M of 305,099 shares at $23.86–$25.69 via a 10b5-1 plan, though the company reported a smaller-than-expected Q2 2026 adjusted loss of $0.41/share on revenue of $6.1M (vs $6.03M forecast). Separately, a hyperscaler development agreement to commercialize silicon photonics for data-center optical connectivity drew positive attention, and Oppenheimer lifted its price target to $42 from $33 (Outperform).

Analysis

The near-term setup in AEVA looks more like an inventory of expectations than a clean fundamental re-rate. A 10b5-1 sale into a sharp share-price run typically adds supply overhang for a few sessions to a few weeks, especially in a low-float name where incremental insider supply can dominate trading. That said, the sale itself is weaker evidence than the valuation backdrop: the stock is already discounting meaningful success before any material revenue from the new optical-connectivity path is visible.

The real economic question is whether the hyperscaler development work converts into a repeatable data-center supplier relationship or stays as a technical option. If this becomes real, the competitive set is less about lidar peers and more about photonics incumbents and adjacent optical-interconnect vendors such as COHR, LITE, MRVL, and AAOI, because they have the manufacturing scale and customer depth to absorb design wins faster. In other words, the upside case for AEVA is large but binary; the downside case is a slow drift lower if disclosure remains vague and commercialization timelines slip.

My read is that consensus is likely over-indexing on the strategic partnership headline and underweighting execution risk: AI data-center optics is a brutal qualification market, and one pilot does not equal margin-accretive revenue. Over 1-3 months, the key falsifier is a second announcement with named volumes, pricing, or a broader customer rollout; over 6-18 months, watch whether gross margin inflects from R&D-story economics to actual scale economics. If that doesn’t happen, the multiple can compress quickly even without a fundamental miss.
